Vegan and vegetarian foods masquerading as meat will soon be considered by a Senate committee.
National Senator Susan McDonald has launched an investigation into food labeling laws as Australia’s red meat industry seeks to protect the provenance of its products.
The former butcher said it was up to manufacturers of non-meat products to come up with their own separate terms instead of grafting on long-established animal proteins like hash and sausage.

“Much like wine growers who want the exclusive use of certain wine names, I firmly believe that our Australian red meat industry should have the exclusive use of product names that have meant only one thing for decades. centuries, ”she said.
John McKillop of the Red Meat Advisory Council said ranchers have struggled.
“It is a national disgrace that highly processed vegetable protein made from imported ingredients is allowed to be labeled as Australian meat,” he said.
“These highly processed, unnatural plant-based products are increasingly viewed as a health risk and bear no resemblance to the red meat produced by Australian farmers.”
Mr McKillop said the brand and reputation of Australian beef, lamb and goat have been built over generations and are now being disparaged by companies who deliberately divert their marketing to sell substandard products .
The survey will examine the economic effects of the marketing of non-animal protein on the Australian red meat industry.
It will also examine the legality of using images of livestock on vegan products and the health benefits of non-animal protein manufacturing processes.
“If you prefer tofu over T-bone, then go ahead but forget about the ethics of consuming animal products, it’s about protecting a high-value industry and also providing a clear distinction between real thing and the alternatives so that consumers know exactly what they are getting, ”Senator McDonald said.
