Britain’s Dawnfresh Seafoods closes its Uddingston plant and invests in the Arbroath site

Dawnfresh Seafoods, a UK provider of retail and food service channels, has planned a multi-million pound investment for one of its two factories as part of plans to shut down the other processing plant in Scotland.

The family-owned business said it was encouraging staff at its Uddingston site in south Lanarkshire – which is slated to close in mid-2022 – to relocate to the company’s factory in the town of ‘Arbroath, Angus, where Dawnfresh is investing £ 5million ($ 6.9million) to expand the plant.

Dawnfresh’s 230 permanent production workers currently employed in Uddingston can apply for 150 new positions at the Arbroath plant, which currently employs 180 people.

A consultation period of at least 45 days with Uddingston staff has begun.

“To help employees relocate, Dawnfresh offers relocation allowance, access to local Angus council support, and protection of current pay and conditions,” he said in a statement. “For those who do not wish to relocate, Dawnfresh engages with employees, unions, skills agencies and councils in North and South Lanarkshire to help people find new employment in the area.

“The company is also looking to work with government and other agencies to find another use of the current site in Uddingston to keep jobs in the area.”

Dawnfresh, which owns the Silver Tide, Loch Etive and RR Spink & Sons brands, said the company currently produces 10,000 tonnes of seafood per year for domestic and international customers. It plans to increase production by 30% over the next five years through the investment in Arbroath and expand its product offering, which consists of 350 different lines.

The company supplies smoked, chilled and frozen seafood, as well as pickled products. It also serves private labels and wholesalers.

Managing Director Raleigh Salvesen said: “For the remainder of this year and until the move next year, our operations in Uddingston will continue as normal. Arbroath’s facility expansion plan will provide a platform for future growth and help Dawnfresh adapt to a changing and highly competitive business sector. This decision is essential if we are to achieve our goal of retaining jobs in seafood production in Scotland. ”

He added: “It will be sad to close our factory in Uddingston, but we encourage our team to join us on this journey and hope that many of our experienced and skilled employees will join us in Arbroath.

“As one of the few remaining large family-owned Scottish seafood companies, we want to protect and develop this heritage and continue to provide the highest quality seafood to our customers across the world. ”
