Dine and Dish: the buzz around the Planet Vegan food truck
Planet Vegan customers are surprised the first time they taste a burger here.
“I thought I was being tricked,” says Tre Maxell. “I was like, ‘This can’t be fake meat. This has to be real meat.’ It tastes absolutely the same.”
Plant-based meat is produced by the Impossible and Beyond Meat companies.
Owner Mike McElroy always urges his acquaintances to try his food truck.
“I tell them to stop and it’s crazy to see their expression the first time they bite the burger,” he said. “They can’t believe it.”
We can’t get enough of Galaxy fries with aioli sauce at Planet Vegan.
“It’s a loaded fry,” McElroy said. “A kind of fried asada, but it’s 100% vegetable of course.”
We were eager to try what everyone was talking about.
McElroy is a former college basketball player.
His father suffers from heart disease, so Mike wanted to adopt a healthier diet for himself, his friends and his family.
“They are also instituting a vegan lifestyle,” he said. “Not 100%, but they put it in their diet and they start to see a lot of improvements.”
Planet Vegan set up shop at 1st and Shaw in northeast Fresno.
Johnny Buentes looked for ways to cut down on his red meat consumption.
“I was really amazed,” he said. “They’re good. They really are and I feel a little better when I eat them. It’s just something different.”
Something different that tastes just like the burger you grew up eating.
Mike knows that people struggle to survive on fresh fruits and vegetables alone.
“It’s more of a price,” he said. “After eating well all week, come treat yourself once.”
Planet Vegan also offers plant-based chicken selections.
