Icewater Seafoods Creates Marine Institute Award in Honor of Bruce Wareham

Icewater Seafoods and the Wareham family of Arnold’s Cove have established a new annual award at the Marine Institute of St. John’s in memory of company founder Bruce Wareham.

The Bruce Wareham Memorial Award in Seafood Quality will award $5,000 per year to a student in the Food Safety Advanced Diploma Program.

Alberto Wareham, president and chief executive of Icewater Seafoods, said the award honors his father’s legacy.

“My father had a deep desire to help those around him succeed,” Wareham said in a press release.

“We hope this award will have a substantial positive impact on one student’s life and education each year. We know doing this in his honor would make him proud.

Applicants are asked to demonstrate how they maintain some of the characteristics that Bruce Wareham himself has quietly demonstrated and appreciated throughout his life: commitment to community, tenacity/ability to adapt to change, quality improvement through innovation and treating people with respect.

The link to the Food Safety Advanced Diploma Program was a natural fit for Icewater Seafoods, a factory that is a world-class seafood manufacturing facility. Food safety standards are taken very seriously by the company, its employees and its international customers.

Wareham said his father, Bruce, was also proud of the quality of education provided by Memorial University and the Fisheries and Marine Institute and had unwavering optimism for the future of fishing in Newfoundland and Labrador. Labrador.

“Mr. Wareham and Icewater Seafoods have been great friends and supporters of the Institute,” said Dr. Rob Shea, Vice President (Marine Institute) at Memorial University. “This award celebrates Bruce’s legacy in the advancement of the seafood industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and inspires our students to apply what they learn at the Institute to make their own impact and contribute to the innovation of the industry for quality and leadership.

The Bruce Wareham Memorial Award in Seafood Quality is one of the largest annual scholarships and awards available to students at the Fisheries and Marine Institute. Students in advanced degree programs like food safety have already earned an undergraduate degree, so recognizing their dedication and excellence with a significant financial contribution will go a long way, Shea said.

Eligible students can apply online. The deadline to apply for the 2022 award is Friday, February 18.
