Indulgent vegan food? Rollin ‘Roots’ Avonte Hartsfield shows it is possible | Restaurants

Welcome back to Good half hour! This week’s special guest is Avonte Hartsfield, owner of Rolling roots food truck at Kearny Mesa. Since opening last fall, Rollin ‘Roots has been serving up comfort foods like fries and sandwiches topped with deep-fried “shrimp” and Buffalo “chicken”, all vegan. Avonte is passionate about fighting the stigma that vegan food has to be expensive, and he’s launched an all-you-can-eat option at the food truck and provides meals to those in need.

Avonte has worked in the restaurant industry since the age of 14, starting as a diver and working his way up through the ranks. He grew up in Riverside and has lived in San Diego for about seven years after residing in Rosarito and Tijuana.

He started serving vegan food at local farmers’ markets after deciding he wanted to eat less meat but couldn’t find anything vegan he liked. He was originally planning to open a restaurant, and the closure in March 2020 forced him to migrate his business model to a food truck. Avonte doesn’t use soy-based meat substitutes – he says they contain a lot of allergens, and eating processed meat substitutes every day is as bad as eating meat every day.

Its menu also fights the preconceived idea that “vegan” simply means “salad.” Avonte says he encourages people to eat a wider variety of plant-based foods, both for their health and that of the planet. Part of her goal is to create familiar foods, like fried macaroni and cheese and po’boys, that taste and texture like their non-vegan counterparts.

Giving back to the community has always been a part of Avonte’s business model, since the days when he worked at farmers’ markets donating food. After seeing and personally experiencing the financial hardships caused by the pandemic, he decided to offer a free or greatly reduced meal as a permanent option at the food truck. He plans to move to a sliding scale payment system, so that each person who shows up will pay according to their ability, to save face instead of having to ask for the free meal. Avonte readily admits that vegan food is more expensive to prepare, but he still hopes to make it accessible to everyone. You can find Rollin ‘Roots parked daily at 8040 Armor Street in Kearny Mesa.

The Tommy Bahama Resortwear line has opened its Marlin Bar retail restaurant concept, with terrace dining, in the Fashion Valley shopping center. Coffee and Wine Breakers getting ready to open in downtown Del Mar Highlands on the Mall’s Sky Deck. The owner, Kyle Rosa, grows coffee on his farm in San Marcos.

In Two People for Takeout / Two People for $ 50, Marie’s choice is tropical sangria and the five-spice pork belly appetizer to Wet stone wine bar at Bankers Hill. David’s choice is La Justine in Tijuana, where they give you seasoned popcorn with grill scrapings while you wait for your order. TO Ethiopian cuisine Gihon, Troy recommends the tibs, meat stew, and garlic tofu, along with their distinct Berber spice-based sauce made and shipped by the owner’s family to Ethiopia. Avonte chose Vegan at the Grossmont Center for their vegan burgers, pork belly hot dogs and kombucha.
