A year after the start of the new US ownership of Peter Pan Seafoods, the company said it looked forward to the next Bristol Bay sockeye fishery, with the capacity to handle as much as was harvested in 2021 and more.

“We’re thrilled,” said John Hickman, vice president of operations for the seafood company. “The forecast (and harvest potential) isn’t that different than it was last year. We can’t wait to have more fish. We have the capacity for what we caught last year and many more, ”he said.

Much of Peter Pan’s catch in 2021 at Bristol Bay went to the domestic markets for fresh, as much fillets as possible, fresh and frozen, and a bit of H&G (headed and gutted), he said. The markets included smaller fish shops as well as supermarkets, and the company also said it sees very good domestic and foreign markets for canned salmon.

The new owners of Peter Pan Seafoods have had no issues with the pandemic itself, Hickman said. “Those who were vaccinated went straight to processing facilities and those who were not vaccinated were isolated before being brought in,” he said.

The cost of employee safety during the pandemic topped $ 7 million for 2021, none of that was paid for with federal pandemic relief funds, he said.

As he enters his second year under a new owner, Peter Pan is constantly on the lookout for new, value-added products, said Ken Taylor, vice president of purchasing, sales and logistics.

The latest products include new frozen items, pickled Pacific cod, black cod and salmon, as well as a Peter Pan-brand portioned product for retail stores and supermarkets, Taylor said, adding that similar products are ready for the restaurant industry, using wild caught sockeye salmon. , Pacific cod, halibut and black cod, as well as Dungeness crab and a small golden king crab.

“We sell throughout North America, in all major metropolitan cities and a few major cities in Canada. With their supply shortage, there are good deals in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. They all love seafood, ”he said.

The company has a good working relationship with retail markets, Hickman said, explaining that club stores like to put seafood under their brand names, therefore some products are not on the shelves under the label. Peter Pan.
